In the Penguin class, children will learn how to adapt to a classroom routine that provides the academic rigor necessary to prepare them for kindergarten, without losing the warmth and joy of learning in a play-based, developmentally appropriate classroom! Penguins will spend the first part of their day engaged in literacy activities during Readers/Writers workshop creating weekly journal entries, then move on for ample time to engage in creative endeavors during Express Yourself! The children will be able to develop their fine motor skills (ability to hold writing utensils with the appropriate grip and scissor skills) as they are given opportunities to complete various craft activities.  These activities will give not only fine motor practice but opportunities to practice following more involved directions, a skill that will help prepare them for kindergarten.  After lunch, Penguins will have time to engage in hands on activities using math manipulatives to collaborate with one another to solve problems.  The children practice counting with 1:1 correspondence (counting objects) and further develop their understanding of the concept of 1, 10 and 100.  Penguins will further develop their ability to listen and participate appropriately at group times and in group instruction so that they are prepared for kindergarten.  They will be exposed to great literature with picture books as well as chapter books.  Penguins will be given the freedom to make choices for themselves and the responsibility to complete their individual work and classroom jobs each day.  They will also continue to deepen their understanding of what it means to be a good friend.  The children will learn how to use their words to engage each other using the conflict resolution process when they come into conflict with each other, as well as successfully navigate through the entire process and solve their disputes independently.  The children will also be given opportunities to continue learning what is means to be a part of a team and how to work together as a team.  At the end of the school year, your Penguin will be ready for kindergarten!
